“You can never cross the ocean until you have the courage to lose sight of the shore” - Andre Gide
Where the Journey Leads
Row to Recovery was built from these experiences.
It takes the spirit of Tame the Kraken and brings it to the community—creating opportunities for veterans, their families, and the communities they live in to reconnect, rebuild, and move forward together.
As a 100% volunteer organization—veterans helping veterans—we are committed to making rowing accessible at every level. From first strokes on calm water to greater challenges ahead, each stage becomes a stepping stone toward confidence, resilience, and purpose.
What sits at the heart of this approach is something both simple and powerful.
There is a growing body of research showing that forms of meditation and mindful activity have a profound impact on mental and physical health. They can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, while improving emotional well-being, focus, and self-awareness.
Rowing naturally brings these elements together. The rhythm of the stroke, the sound of the water, the focus required to move in unison—it creates a state of presence that mirrors meditation. At the same time, it is a full-body, low-impact exercise that strengthens the cardiovascular system, improves overall fitness, and supports long-term physical health.
When you combine the mental clarity of mindfulness with the physical benefits of rowing, something unique happens. It becomes more than exercise. More than sport. It becomes therapy.
That is the foundation of Row to Recovery.
Despite the scale and challenge of ocean rowing, the true mission goes far beyond the water. Row to Recovery is a recreational therapy program designed to raise awareness, educate communities, and provide meaningful opportunities for individuals—particularly veterans—to come together, support one another, and experience the benefits of rowing in an accessible and supportive environment.
Because recovery doesn’t happen in isolation. It happens through shared experience, steady progress, and the opportunity to move forward—together.
